Several weeks of using the future_select() construct
has led to the proposal there be just one select() construct
again which features the new join() method, and otherwise accepts
both the 1.x and 2.x argument styles. This would make
migration simpler and reduce confusion.
However, confusion may be increased by the fact that select().join()
is different Current thinking is we may be better off
with a few hard behavioral changes to old and relatively unknown APIs
rather than trying to play both sides within two extremely similar
but subtly different APIs. At the moment, the .join() thing seems
to be the only behavioral change that occurs without the user
taking any explicit steps. Session.execute() will still
behave the old way as we are adding a future flag.
This change also adds the "future" flag to Session() and
session.execute(), so that interpretation of the incoming statement,
as well as that the new style result is returned, does not
occur for existing applications unless they add the use
of this flag.
The change in general is moving the "removed in 2.0" system
further along where we want the test suite to fully pass
even if the SQLALCHEMY_WARN_20 flag is set.
Get many tests to pass when SQLALCHEMY_WARN_20 is set; this
should be ongoing after this patch merges.
Improve the RemovedIn20 warning; these are all deprecated
"since" 1.4, so ensure that's what the messages read.
Make sure the inforamtion link is on all warnings.
Add deprecation warnings for parameters present and
add warnings to all FromClause.select() types of methods.

step one, do away with __connection attribute and using
awkward AttributeError logic
step two, move all management of "connection._transaction"
into the transaction objects themselves where it's easier
to follow.
build MarkerTransaction that takes the role of
"do-nothing block"
new connection datamodel is: connection._transaction, always
a root, connection._nested_transaction, always a nested.
nested transactions still chain to each other as this
is still sort of necessary but they consider the root
transaction separately, and the marker transactions
not at all.
introduce new InvalidRequestError subclass
PendingRollbackError. Apply to connection and session
for all cases where a transaction needs to be rolled
back before continuing. Within Connection,
both PendingRollbackError as well as ResourceClosedError
are now raised directly without being handled by
handle_dbapi_error(); this removes these two exception
cases from the handle_error event handler as well as
from StatementError wrapping, as these two exceptions are
not statement oriented and are instead programmatic
issues, that the application is failing to handle database
errors properly.
Revise savepoints so that when a release fails, they set
themselves as inactive so that their rollback() method
does not throw another exception.
Give savepoints another go on MySQL, can't get release working
however get support for basic round trip going

For many years we have encountered users making use of the
"single_parent" flag in response to the error message for
"delete-orphan" expressing this as a means to cancel the current
error. However, the actual issue here is usually a misuse
of the delete-orphan cascade setting. Reword the error message to
be much more descriptive about what this means and add new
error link sections describing the situation in as much detail
as possible.

zzzeeksphinx 1.1.2 in git can now convert short
prefix names in a configured lookup to fully qualified module
names, so that
we can have succinct and portable pyrefs
that still resolve absolutely.
It also includes a formatter that will format all pyrefs
in a fully consistent way regardless of the package path,
by unconditionally removing all package tokens but always
leaving class names in place including for methods, which
means we no longer have to deal with tildes in pyrefs.
The most immediate goal of the absolute prefixes is
that we have lots of
"ambiguous" names that appear in muliple places, like select(),
ARRAY, ENUM etc. With the incoming future packages there
is going to be lots of name overlap so it is necessary
that all names eventually use absolute package paths
when Sphinx receives them.
In multiple stages, pyrefs will be converted using the
zzzeeksphinx tools/fix_xrefs.py tool so that doclinks can
be made absolute using symbolic prefixes.
For this review, the actual search and replace of symbols
is not performed, instead some general cleanup to prepare
the docs as well as a lookup file used by the tool
to do the conversion. this relatively small patch will
be backported
with appropriate changes to 1.3, 1.2, 1.1 and the tool
can then be run on each branch individually. We are shooting
for almost no warnings at all for master (still a handful
I can't figure out which don't seem to have any impact)
, very few for 1.3,
and for 1.2 / 1.1 we hope for a significant reduction
in warnings.
Overall for all versions pyrefs should
always point to the correct target, if they are in fact
hyperlinked. it's better for a ref to go nowhere and
be plain text than go to the wrong thing. Right now,
hundreds of API links are pointing to the wrong thing
as they are ambiguous names such as refresh(), insert(),
update(), select(), join(), JSON etc. and Sphinx sends these all
to essesntially random destinations among as many as five
or six possible choices per symbol. A shorthand system
that allows us to use absolute refs without having
to type out a full blown absoulte module is the only
way this is going to work, and we should ultimately
seek to abandon any use of prefix dot for lookups. Everything
should be on an underscore token so at the very least the module
spaces can be reorganized without having to search and replace
the entire documentation every time.

:func:`.sql.expression.select`, :func:`.sql.expression.insert`
and :class:`.sql.expression.Insert` were hitting many ambiguous
symbol errors, due to future.select, as well as the PG/MySQL
variants of Insert.

Execution of literal sql string is deprecated in the
:meth:`.Connection.execute` and a warning is raised when used stating
that it will be coerced to :func:`.text` in a future release.
To execute a raw sql string the new connection method
:meth:`.Connection.exec_driver_sql` was added, that will retain the previous
behavior, passing the string to the DBAPI driver unchanged.
Usage of scalar or tuple positional parameters in :meth:`.Connection.execute`
is also deprecated.

Reorganization of Select() is the first major element
of the 2.0 restructuring. In order to start this we need
to first create the new Select constructor and apply legacy
elements to the old one. This in turn necessitates
starting up the RemovedIn20Warning concept which itself
need to refer to "sqlalchemy.future", so begin to establish
this basic framework. Additionally, update the
DML constructors with the newer no-keyword style. Remove
the use of the "pending deprecation" and fix Query.add_column()
deprecation which was not acting as deprecated.

As part of the SQLAlchemy 2.0 migration project, a conceptual change has
been made to the role of the :class:`.SelectBase` class hierarchy,
which is the root of all "SELECT" statement constructs, in that they no
longer serve directly as FROM clauses, that is, they no longer subclass
:class:`.FromClause`. For end users, the change mostly means that any
placement of a :func:`.select` construct in the FROM clause of another
:func:`.select` requires first that it be wrapped in a subquery first,
which historically is through the use of the :meth:`.SelectBase.alias`
method, and is now also available through the use of
:meth:`.SelectBase.subquery`. This was usually a requirement in any
case since several databases don't accept unnamed SELECT subqueries
in their FROM clause in any case.

The :class:`.Connection` object will now not clear a rolled-back
transaction until the outermost transaction is explicitly rolled back.
This is essentially the same behavior that the ORM :class:`.Session` has
had for a long time, where an explicit call to ``.rollback()`` on all
enclosing transactions is required for the transaction to logically clear,
even though the DBAPI-level transaction has already been rolled back.
The new behavior helps with situations such as the "ORM rollback test suite"
pattern where the test suite rolls the transaction back within the ORM
scope, but the test harness which seeks to control the scope of the
transaction externally does not expect a new transaction to start
implicitly.

In preparation for #4712, add an errors.rst code to the Session's
exception about waiting to be rolled back and rework the FAQ entry
to be much more succinct. When this FAQ was first written, I found
it hard to describe why flush worked this way but as the use case is
clearer now, and #4712 actually showed it being confusing when it doesn't
work this way, we can make a simpler and more definitive statement
about this behavior. Additionally, language about "subtransactions"
is minimized as I might be removing or de-emphasizing this concept in
2.0 (though maybe not as it does seem to work well).

This affects mostly docstrings, except in orm/events.py::dispose_collection()
where one parameter gets renamed: given that the method is
empty, it seemed reasonable to me to fix that too.

Added a ``__clause_element__()`` method to :class:`.ColumnProperty` which
can allow the usage of a not-fully-declared column or deferred attribute in
a declarative mapped class slightly more friendly when it's used in a
constraint or other column-oriented scenario within the class declaration,
though this still can't work in open-ended expressions; prefer to call the
:attr:`.ColumnProperty.expression` attribute if receiving ``TypeError``.
