MAINT: Remove the attempt to defer to more precise (non direct) subclasses
This seems just complicated, PyPy doesn't fully allow it, and CPython's `int` class does not even attempt it... So, just remove most of this logic (although, this keeps the "is subclass" information around, even if that is effectively unused).
